Convisoft is an idea I had with Andrew Rhyne to setup an open-source software organisation with some goals including:
- Development & adoption open-source components such as libraries and frameworks necessary to make mobile app development as easy as possible;
- QA testing and maintenance to assure the quality level of the software components;
- Provide a quality stamp of approval for open-source mobile app components
The Convisoft dev forum group is setup to provide a place for sponsors and founding members to discuss how to setup and operate this new organisation. During the initial phase, anyone is welcome to join by pressing the "Ask to join" button. The Convisoft dev help group is provided to help founding members who are not so familiar with mobile app development.
Here are some points for new mobile app developers:
- There are two types of mobile apps: mobile web apps that run off a server and mobile apps that are installed on the device. The goals of Convisoft include both types.
- For mobile apps that are installed on the device, some mobile apps are native and some mobile apps use an HTML5 web view. The HTML5 web view is a much easier starting point for new mobile app developers. The focus of Convisoft will start with mobile apps that use an HTML5 web view.
- For mobile apps that use the HTML5 web view, access to built-in device functionality is provided using a framework such as Cordova/PhoneGap. Custom device functionality can be provided using Cordova/PhoneGap plugins.
